Factory Game Scene Engraved A. H. Fox XE Grade Double Barrel Shotgun
Manufactured in 1921, this A. H. Fox XE Grade side-by-side shotgun is a beautifully preserved example of early 20th-century American sporting-gun craftsmanship, offering the kind of engraving, wood quality, and classic Fox styling that make these guns especially desirable to collectors. It is built with blued steel barrels featuring dual white bead sights on a matted concave solid rib, with “CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL” marked on the right tube and “MADE BY A. H. FOX GUN Co. PHILA. PA. U.S.A.” on the left tube, plus 1 3/4-inch wedges of leafy scroll engraving at each breech. The chambers measure 2 5/8 inches and the gun is equipped with automatic ejectors. The barrels are fitted to a casehardened boxlock action displaying highly attractive XE Grade pattern engraving, with near full-coverage leafy scroll surrounding three oval game-scene panels: a pair of quail in flight on the left side, a pair of mallards in flight on the right side, and an alert fox on the underside, an especially fitting and collectible detail for an A. H. Fox shotgun. Desirable handling features include a single selective trigger and a tang-mounted automatic safety. The gun is mounted with a beautifully figured, multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and an ebony tip inlay, paired with a pistol grip stock fitted with a hard rubber factory grip cap and a hard rubber buttplate. Barrel and stock measurements are as follows, right/left where applicable: bore diameter nine inches from the breech .733/.727 inches, choke constriction .039/.034 inches, minimum wall thickness .020/.024 inches, 1 3/4-inch drop at comb, 3 1/16-inch drop at heel, 13 13/16-inch length of pull, and a weight of 6 lbs. 13 oz. With its 1921 manufacture date, XE Grade engraving, game-scene artistry, Chromox steel barrels, fine figured wood, and classic Fox configuration, this shotgun is an exceptional collector-quality American double with strong appeal for both display and traditional field use.
Very fine as professionally refurbished, retaining 99% blue finish, strong remnants of original case colors in the protected areas with the balance a fine silver patina, small crack at the left of the stock head, and sharp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
