Factory Engraved A. H. Fox CE Grade Double Barrel Shotgun
Manufactured in 1925, this A.H. Fox shotgun is a classic example of fine American gunmaking. The blued Chromox Fluid Compressed Steel barrels feature dual white bead sights on the raised, matted concave solid rib, marked “CHROMOX FLUID COMPRESSED STEEL” on the right barrel and “MADE BY A. H. FOX GUN CO. PHILA. PA. U.S.A.” on the left. The barrels have 2 5/8-inch chambers with ejectors and standard markings on the flats.
The receiver displays C-grade engraving with “ANSLEY H. FOX” banners on either side, two partridge on the left, two woodcocks on the right, and a setter on the underside, all framed by fine scrollwork. The gun features double triggers and a tang-mounted safety.
It is fitted with a nicely figured, multi-point checkered walnut forearm with engraved forend iron, Deeley latch release, and ebony tip insert, paired with a pistol grip stock featuring a Fox hard rubber grip cap and Pachmayr Old English recoil pad.
Chambers marked and measure 2 3/4 in.; bore 9 in. from breech measures .729 in.; bore constriction .007/.016 in.; minimum wall thickness .033/.034 in.; drop at comb 1 13/16 in.; drop at heel 3 in.; length of pull 14 1/2 in.; weight 7 lbs. 12 oz.
Excellent, retaining 98% plus original blue on the barrels, 50% original case colors with the balance a silver patina, 90% blue on the trigger guard, and strong traces of case colors on the forearm fittings. The metal has minor handling evidence. The freshened wood has two tiny cracks at the rear of the forearm and a tiny crack near the lower tang screw, otherwise the wood is very fine with minor marks and sharp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
