Highly Desirable Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine in Rare .50 Express

$ 27499.99

Manufactured in 1910, this Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine in the formidable .50 Express is a rare and highly desirable collector piece with deep Old West appeal. Combining John Moses Browning’s landmark Winchester design with one of the most powerful chamberings of its era, this carbine stands out as a scarce, historically important, and especially charismatic frontier firearm.

  • Highly desirable Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine
  • Manufactured in 1910
  • Chambered in the powerful and venerable .50 Express cartridge
  • Designed by John Moses Browning:
    • The Model 1886 was the first Browning-designed repeater purchased by Winchester
    • It gave Winchester an extremely strong lever-action rifle capable of handling the most powerful cartridges available at the time
    • Browning’s design introduced vertical locking lugs to Winchester’s basic action design
    • This stronger system effectively made Winchester’s earlier toggle-link designs obsolete
    • The Model 1886 laid the foundation for many later Winchester models
  • Important American West history:
    • The Model 1886 quickly became popular on the frontier
    • Its hard-hitting calibers were well suited for the dangers and demands of western use
    • The design remained in service and popular well into the 20th century, proving its rugged dependability
  • Scarce .50 Express carbine configuration:
    • According to research by John T. Madl published in “The Winchester Collector,” approximately 6,660 Model 1886 carbines are listed in existing factory records
    • Only 1,208 of those recorded carbines were chambered in .50 Express
    • The .50 Express chambering accounts for only about 18% of recorded Model 1886 carbine production
    • Far fewer examples are believed to have survived their hard working lives, especially in fine condition
  • Factory-record note:
    • This specific carbine falls within one of two serial number ranges for which the factory records have been lost
    • Madl notes that these missing-record ranges account for approximately 8,000 Model 1886s overall, not just carbines
    • Even with those missing records, available factory data confirms the .50 Express carbine as a rare and highly desirable variation
  • Authentic working-gun character:
    • Standard-configuration Model 1886 carbines like this were usually treated as practical tools during their period of use, not preserved as future collectibles
    • This example clearly shows signs of use as a respected and well-cared-for western working gun
    • That honest frontier character adds to its historical appeal and collector presence
  • Factory markings and proofs:
    • Winchester factory oval proofs on the barrel and receiver at the breech
    • Upper left side of the barrel is marked with the two-line Winchester address and patent dates
    • Caliber marking appears at the breech
    • Upper tang is marked with the three-line model and trademark information
    • Lower tang has the two-line patent dates and serial number
  • Sights and carbine features:
    • Pinned German silver blade front sight
    • Folding ladder rear sight
    • Saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver
  • Stock and furniture:
    • Smooth forearm
    • Straight grip stock
    • Carbine buttplate
  • Collector appeal:
    • Rare .50 Express chambering in a Winchester Model 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine
    • Strong association with John Moses Browning’s first Winchester repeater design
    • Historically significant frontier-era configuration
    • Supported by published collector research documenting the scarcity of .50 Express carbines
    • A compelling example for advanced Winchester, Browning-design, Old West, and big-bore lever-action collectors
Condition

Very fine, retaining 80% of the factory refinished blue on the receiver and the subsequently lightly period cleaned barrel, magazine tube, and barrel bands showing a mix of 50% blue and plum brown patina with a few scattered patches of dried grease in sheltered areas, a few scattered freckles of light oxidation on the left of the receiver, and some scattered light scratches. The wood is also very fine exhibiting western charm with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
