Attractive Documented Antique Special Order Winchester Second Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle with Scarce Nickel Finish, Fancy Stock, and Factory Letter

$ 9999.99

This rare Winchester Model 1873 from 1879 is a true collector’s gem, featuring the distinctive second-model receiver with a dust cover guide secured by two screws and a dust cover adorned with the unique sunken, checkered “thumbprint” grip area. According to renowned Winchester historian George Madis, this rifle represents one of only about one in 600 Model 1873s that were special-ordered with a plated nickel finish—half plated in this case—and also one of a select few with the exceptional figured wood seen here. The original factory letter confirms these special features, listing an octagon barrel, nickel finish, set trigger for enhanced accuracy, sling swivels for practical use, and a fancy, finely figured stock, all part of order number 15092 received on April 9, 1879, and shipped the following day. These attributes made this rifle particularly desirable on the Western Frontier, combining durable corrosion resistance, superior shooting capability, and ease of carry. The rifle’s barrel bears the classic two-line Winchester address and King’s patent markings, while the model is elegantly marked on the upper tang and serial number on the lower tang. Notably, it retains its original set trigger, elevation-adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight, and special sling swivels, though the blade front sight is missing. The beautifully grained smooth forearm and straight-grip stock are complemented by a trapdoor crescent buttplate—original but with one screw intact despite a slight break—adding to its historic authenticity. This Winchester Model 1873 stands out for its rarity, original special-order features, and exceptional collector appeal, making it a remarkable investment piece for discerning enthusiasts.

Condition

Fine, retains strong traces of original blue finish in sheltered areas and 75% of the untouched original nickel finish with the balance having thinned/flaked to mostly a smooth brown patina with some scattered patches of light pitting/oxidation, all typical of gun that saw time in the American West. The slightly dry wood is also fine with scattered minor dings and scratches, as would be expected on a working gun. Mechanically functions, apart from the set trigger. This Winchester 1873 really has the “Old West” look!
