Collectors seeking a distinctive piece of American firearms history will appreciate this exceptional Second Model Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Single Action revolver, manufactured around 1878. A true rarity, this revolver showcases the early open top frame with a square butt and a unique scoop flute cylinder, hallmarks that make it especially desirable to enthusiasts and historians alike. It retains its original two-piece, checkered hard rubber grips and standard lanyard ring, with the barrel, cylinder, and frame all featuring the striking brilliance of nickel plating. Adding to its visual appeal, the hammer, trigger, cylinder latch, and trigger guard display beautifully color casehardened finishes, while the hammer spur features distinctive coarse knurling. The authenticity of this piece is further reflected in its detailed roll-stamping: “MERWIN HULBERT & Co. NEW YORK, U.S.A.” with patent dates (1874-1877) on the barrel, “THE HOPKINS & ALLEN Manufacturing Co. Norwich, Conn. U.S.A.” on the barrel’s left side, and “CALIBRE/WINCHESTER 1872” on the frame. All serial and assembly numbers are original and matching, with serial number “10785” located on the butt behind the lanyard loop and assembly number “485” on the inside of the barrel lug and rear face of the cylinder. Combining mechanical innovation, period authenticity, and eye-catching aesthetics, this revolver stands out as a must-have collectible, offering significant historical importance and investment potential for discerning collectors.

Condition

Near new. The revolver retains 98% plus of the original nickel-plated finish. Wear is limited to a few very minor storage marks and a 1/4 inch patch of flaking on the top of the backstrap at the junction with the left grip. The hammer, trigger, trigger guard, and cylinder latch retain 97% of the color casehardened finish with strong case colors. The barrel and frame markings are crisp. The hard rubber grips are in excellent condition and show almost no wear. The cylinder lock up needs work; otherwise, the revolver functions. This is an exceptional example of a very desirable Merwin, Hulbert & Co. Large Frame Open Top Single Action revolver.
