Winchester Second Model 1876 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine
This fine example of a Winchester Second Model 1876 saddle ring carbine, manufactured in 1878, represents one of the scarcer variations of the 1876 line. With only about 9,623 carbines produced compared to 53,367 rifles, this carbine is notably rare. The included factory letter documents the carbine’s receipt at the warehouse on March 12, 1878, and its initial shipment on May 8, 1878 (order #11779). It was returned on September 6, 1880, and subsequently reshipped on November 1, 1880 (order #22831).
The carbine features the distinctive second model receiver, identifiable by the dust cover guide secured with two screws and a flush checkered “thumbprint” grip on the dust cover. The barrel top bears the classic two-line address and King’s patent marking, partially obscured by the rear sight. True to original configuration, the carbine lacks caliber markings, as the Model 1876 was initially offered solely in .45-75 W.C.F. caliber. The upper tang is marked with the model designation, and the serial number is located on the lower tang.
Sight setup includes a block blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight, with a functional saddle ring mounted on the left side of the receiver. The wood furniture consists of a smooth forearm and a straight grip stock fitted with a carbine buttplate. This carbine is a historically significant and desirable representation of Winchester’s 1876 line.
Fine, retains 40% plus of the original blue finish, 60% of the original case colors on the hammer and 30% on the lever, and 40% of the original nitre blue on the loading gate with the balance having thinned to a mix of grey and brown patina and scattered small patches of light pitting/oxidation. The wood is very fine with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent. A fine example of a highly desirable Winchester second Model 1876 saddle ring carbine!
