Excellent Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Rifle Chambered in the Desirable .22 Short Caliber

$ 21999.99

Collectors and firearm enthusiasts will appreciate this outstanding Winchester Model 1873 lever-action rifle, manufactured in 1893 and chambered in the highly sought-after .22 Short rimfire caliber. As the very first .22 caliber rifle ever produced by Winchester—and indeed, the first .22 repeating rifle made in the United States—this piece holds a special place in American firearms history. Noteworthy for its unique .22 caliber receiver devoid of a loading gate, it features a front-loading magazine with the later pattern magazine tube. The third model receiver is equipped with an integral dust cover guide and serrated-edge dust cover for added authenticity. Classic markings adorn the top barrel flat, including the early Winchester address and patent dates, with “22 SHORT” marked boldly at the breech and “22 CAL./SHORT.” stamped in script on the cartridge elevator. Both the blade front and adjustable buckhorn rear sights remain intact, along with a short-range tang-mounted peep sight. Its original blue finish complements the striking casehardened hammer, lever, and crescent buttplate, all paired with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock for timeless appeal. The lower tang still bears the original serial number, underscoring this rifle’s provenance. Combining remarkable historical significance, rare caliber, desirable configuration, and excellent condition, this rifle is a true centerpiece for any collector looking to invest in an authentic piece of Winchester legacy.

Condition

Excellent. The barrel and magazine tube have 80% original blue with the balance a mottled brown patina with some minor pitting on the forward end. The receiver retains 95% bright original high polish blue finish with scattered flaking, showing a smooth brown patina on the exposed areas. The hammer retains 95% original bright case colors, 60% original case colors remain on the buttplate with a smooth gray patina on the balance, and the lever has 40% original case colors with a smooth gray patina on the balance. The wood is also excellent with a few minor pressure dents and handling marks. The markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent.
